2024 IUCN WCPA Steering Committee meeting convened in La Paz, México

April 25, 2024 – The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Steering Committee convened in La Paz, Mexico, from 20-24 April, 2024 with the distinguished hospitality of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP).

This year, the WCPA Steering Committee meeting served as a platform to present Mexico's conservation efforts and initiatives to the esteemed members of the WCPA Steering Committee, and to discuss issues and initiatives that span local to global conservation priorities. In addition to the WCPA Steering Committee, attendees included renowned conservationists, policymakers, and experts in the field of protected and conserved areas.

WCPA was honoured to receive the participation of Adán Peña Fuentes, National Commissioner for CONANP, whose insightful presentation captivated attendees with its focus on critical issues facing protected areas. Mr. Peña Fuentes emphasized the urgency of addressing GBF Target 3 and the 30x30 initiative, sustainable financing for protected areas, and tourism in protected areas.

The 2024 meeting builds momentum for WCPA's vast body of work as the world's premier network of protected and conserved areas experts, setting the agenda for the year ahead. Alongside other priorities, the Commission will continue to focus on the equitable implementation of Target 3, sustainable financing for protected and conserved areas, and marine conservation.
